The Program
New Space Studio recognizes the positive impact a relationship with the visual arts can have on individuals and communities. Art is capable of broadening our understanding of the world we live in and the people we share it with. We work to provide the tools of art making to those who have had few creative opportunities because art will enrich their lives, and the lives of people around them.
We know that each artist has a vision and by providing space, materials and support we enable them to make art on their own terms and in their own interest. New Space is dedicated to fostering creative freedom so that our clients can further develop their sense of self. We host dynamic and spirited art making sessions that spark our clients to explore and develop their creative processes and engage in a broader artistic community.
Who We Are
Nicholas Henderson-Nold's first encounter with New Space Studio was in 2007, when he volunteered briefly at its Sawtooth Studio location in West Berkeley. After returning to the Bay Area in 2011, he re-engaged with the program, working with Zach Pine, its passionate and expert director, to keep the studio operating despite severely limited funds and inadequate facilities. Even in these challenging circumstances, Zach filled the studio with life and creativity, and in 2014, Nick aims to provide the artists with same creative energy.
Nick received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010, and keeps an active painting practice. Since graduating, Nick has varied his experiences in the arts, exhibiting in Chicago, working in galleries in San Francisco, and installing shows at the Berkeley Art Museum. When he isn’t working on his own art or witnessing the wonderful creativity of the New Space artists, he’s reading, running, or watching baseball (or basketball depending on the time of year). His goal is to help the studio grow and thrive, and he’s always looking forward to the next masterpiece created by one of The NSS artists.
Natasha Nazer happened upon Access Studio in 2011. She found the open studio format inspiring and started volunteering there twice a week. During her time there she learned about the benefits of free-form art practice under the expertise of Zach Pine and Nick Nold. In 2012 Natasha went on to study Psychology at UC Davis where she developed a strong interest in Art Therapy. Upon returning to the Bay Area in 2014, she resumed work at the art studio with Nick and together they decided to reshape the program into New Space.
Natasha has a profound interest in the arts and their relation to personal development. In her time at New Space, she has seen first-hand how art making can greatly bolster one’s sense of self. She feels that New Space is uniquely conducive to personal growth in that it is a very positive social and creative environment. When Natasha isn’t working with the incredible artists at New Space, she is usually talking about the program to anyone that will listen, reading, cooking, or trying to figure out if she’s any good at making art. Natasha is dedicated to the artists and building New Space into a program that will have respected place in and a positive impact on the East Bay disability community.
